For Steve Schmid, wood floors started out as a hobby. He first installed his own hardwood floors at his log cabin in Sturgeon Lake in 1980. At the time, he was a teacher and counselor in the Minneapolis Public Schools. He completed the project with the help of his wife, Linda, and it sparked a passion for both of them. He fell in love with his cabin’s floors and ripped out the carpet of his home in Roseville, MN to install hardwood there as well. When a neighbor saw the results, he asked for help with his own home. This is how Floors By Steve was born.

Word traveled fast, and soon other neighbors, fellow teachers, friends, and relatives asked Steve for help with hardwood installations. Some even started to ask him to refinish their existing floors. For years, Steve operated off the kitchen table and basement office, working after school, on weekends, and during summer vacation. When Steve’s daughter, Lisa, joined the team in 1995, Floors By Steve really took off. Steve retired from the school system in 1999 and began devoting his time to the business on a more permanent basis.

Today, the Schmids have a 2,000-square-foot showroom in Roseville, MN that boasts a beautiful show floor inlaid with a colorful, swirling pattern. "You can take a trip around the world just by visiting our store," Linda says.

In addition to domestic woods such as oak, maple, cherry, and birch, Floors By Steve also sells exotic wood from Europe, the Caribbean, South America, and coastal regions of the Mediterranean, just to name a few. Our showroom contains over 200 samples of exotic, domestic, solid, floating, and engineered wood. In addition to the Schmids, we have 10 experienced employees, and we're proud to be your local wood floor experts. We sell and install finished and unfinished wood. We can also sand and refinish existing wood floors. There’s no project too big or too small for us.
